Mutant Mudds – Grannie’s Attic
Mutant Mudds had one of the better chiptune soundtracks of last year. Sadly going retro has become a common trend in games lately and it is beginning to taste bitter. Still this soundtrack deserves it’s props and I highly suggest downloading it.
5. Hotline Miami – M.O.O.N.
Ever felt like murdering someone in heartless gory ways that you can only dream of? Ever wanted to do cocaine? Hotline Miami let players fulfill their every sociopathic dream to it’s bloody, messed up detail. If there has been any game that created an environment to immerse the player within, Hotline Miami is the one that blows it all out of a needle.
4. Little Inferno – Reporting from the Weather Balloon
One of the most emotional experiences that I had last year was playing through Little Inferno. Not only did the game attach you to great characters but it had a dark creepy twist that still haunts me to this point in time. This song won’t mean much if you have not played the game, but if you have played Little Inferno you will understand. Not to say this is a bad song outside the game, otherwise it wouldn’t make the list. But me shivering from fear, thinking that a girl without eyeballs was going to burn down my house and burst through the screen everytime I put something in the fireplace was an experience that I probably will never have again, and this song is all I have to remember it.
3. Journey – I Was Born For This
Journey was the most beautiful game that was released in 2012, indefinitely. Sliding down shimmering sands of my ancestors and watching countless partners die in the sand and snow gave me emotional moments that I don’t think any game will ever create again. The music in Journey struck me the first time I played through the game, being a powerful story about an endless journey to mountains that lead to light. I didn’t know what I was getting into when I started Journey, but I had two companions, a stranger and the music.
2. FTL – Civil (Explore)
No one can describe the magic in FTL’s music that makes me love it so much but let me try. Wandering through an empty space of nothingness and a place where there is no noise and only your thought. There are millions of things in the universe and you are one tiny piece of it. It will be exciting if you choose to make it that way or it can be dreadful if you decide not. There is so much wonder in our existence and FTL’s soundtrack truly makes you wonder.
1. Gravity Rush – Resistance and Extermination
Gravity Rush has the best soundtrack of 2012 and one of the most notable of the past 15 years in my opinion. Jumping in directions that only the game and your hands know, the huge rainbow of colors are painted throughout the air in ways that could only be done once, the soundtrack bumps, hums and whistles through your ears and you know you are in for a treat that will only be taken once. Do yourself a favor and go play this game.
